What is Coaching Supervision?
ILM Level 7 Coaching Supervision

What is Coaching Supervision?

Professional coaches who take quality seriously invest in a qualified supervisor.

Just as a coach can help maximise the performance of an executive, so a good supervisor helps maximise the coach's performance.

This is particularly important for coaches working alone or in small organisations - the supervisor is independent of the contractural pressures faced by the coach and can concentrate on the effectiveness of the interventions which have or can be made.

Organisations that have introduced performance coaching as part of their Leadership and Management development need to ensure that standards are maintained over time. External coaching supervision is the acknowledged route to real quality assurance.

The purpose of coaching supervision is to:

  • ensure that the client/coachee continues to receive the best coaching possible from the coach, in terms of integrity, professionalism and coaching delivery, and that their best interests are served
  • ensure that the coach has a confidential and secure space in which to investigate and understand their thoughts and feelings about the coachee, and their relationship
  • enhance the learning of the coach and to raise their awareness to create a more effective and enabling conversation with and for the coachee
  • give the coach a restorative space.

What is it?

Supervision resembles coaching in that it is based around a structured 1:1 conversation. However the Supervisor will attend to the coach/coachee relationship, the relationship and reactions being created in the room between the supervisor and coach and the overall context of the coaching in the client organisation. This multi level attention creates increased awareness of the effectiveness of the coaching and generates fresh insights, renewed focus and confidence for the coach.

Who should have a Supervisor?

Everyone who coaches others, whether as an independent professional or as part of an in-house team and who is serious about maximising effectiveness and maintaining standards.
